* * *

By the time Grace finished showering, Josh had sent her the location of a restaurant to meet at. But it was hard to summon her earlier excitement.

The fact was, Tiff wasn’t completely wrong. Grace was making excuses to Josh about her activities, even though it was his fault she was single in the first place. But Tiff also had no idea how complicated the situation really was. Grace was trapped in this kind of limbo where she and Josh had regressed back to the early stages of dating, but with the developed feelings of a long relationship. How could she be expected to just cut ties and erase everything between them without any kind of real closure?

Grace had no idea what to think of her relationship with Josh anymore. All she knew was that she still wanted to see him more than she wanted to see anyone else, and if that made her pathetic, so be it. She couldn’t just give up now. Not after all the time and emotions she’d invested. She was determined to see it through to the bitter end, no matter which way it went.

She refused to have regrets about what could have been.

There was a soft knock on her bedroom door, followed by Camille’s gentle voice. “May I come in?”

Grace threw the door open for her and flopped onto the bed, mentally preparing herself for some kind of intervention or mediation, no doubt. Sometimes it felt like college was one giant sitcom, where every conflict was amplified for drama and someone always had to learn a lesson at the end.

If only it wasn’t always her having to do the learning.

“I don’t want to talk about Tiff,” Grace said before Camille could say a word.

“I am not here to talk about Tiffany,” Camille reassured her. “I just come to check on you.”

Grace rolled her eyes. “To see if I have any self-respect left?”

Grace knew she was absolutely playing the part of the bratty teen on the sitcom, but she couldn’t help it. She was going through massive emotional turmoil, and all her best friend seemed to care about was whether Grace would fuck someone new.

Camille stayed safely tucked against the wall, as if Grace were a wild animal harboring unpredictable and possibly dangerous behaviors. “That was not nice to say. But we are worried about you.”

“What is there to worry about?”

Camille shot her a knowing look, and Grace had to look away to conceal her guilty face.

Of course her friends were worried. Even Grace was worried.

“If Josh is good for you, I will be so happy,” Camille said. “But you are sad all the time because of him.”

“Not all the time,” Grace protested weakly. “I’ve been plenty happy since we’ve been here, even though he’s been texting me.”

“Maybe this is because of Daniel, no?”

Grace scoffed. “Please. Last night was one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever experienced, and I once accidentally shouted ‘ménage à trois’ in history class instead of ‘coup d’état.’ ”

Camille giggled at the French mix-up but pressed on.
